There are many hiking trails in Gatlinburg that are fit for people of all ages, so everyone can see the Great Smoky Mountains. Although the trails range in difficulty, several are ideal for families with children. None of these hikes are extremely difficult, but this list explains the easiest hikes for families with children. This list is ranked from those most appropriate for younger children to those that may be better with children that are a little older.

Cosby Nature Trail

When choosing a hiking trail in Gatlinburg for younger kids, this simple one mile loop is a great place to start. The trail winds through the forest and crosses many streams. The trail itself is very level, so walking should not be too difficult. The trail is signposted just past the Cosby entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a trail guide is available at the trail entrance.

Grotto Falls

This hike is approximately 2.6 miles long and is one of the waterfall hiking trails in Gatlinburg. The roundtrip loop trail goes through the forest and gently climbs to the Grotto Falls waterfall. At times, the trail can seem moderately steep, but children should be able to hike it without any problems. Along the way, hikers will cross four small streams. As a bonus for hikers taking the Grotto Falls trail in the summer, hundreds of wildflowers decorate the path. Note that the trail is extremely popular for families. There are additional parking spaces available beyond the trailhead parking lot.

Baskins Creek Falls

This moderate three mile roundtrip trail is part of the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The trail starts off with an easy climb and then levels off for the remainder of the journey. Only the last 150 feet of the trail, leading to the waterfall, is a bit steep. Most kids will be able to manage the last 150 feet with the assistance of accompanying adults.

Huskey Gap

This is a bit of a longer trail at 4.2 miles round-trip. It is relatively easy for kids of all ages. This hike is especially well known for its access to beautiful wildflowers in the spring and summer months. This trail is accessed by driving 1.5 miles south from Sugarlands Visitor Center along Newfound Gap Road.

Alum Cave

Being one of the most popular hiking trails in Gatlinburg, Alum Cave is approximately 4.4 miles long. The round-trip hike begins with a moderate climb and is well suited for older kids. After just over two miles, hikers will reach Alum Cave which is actually a bluff rather than a cave. However, the views from this point are spectacular. To access the trail, visitors should drive 8.7 miles south from the Sugarlands Visitor Center along Newfound Gap Road. This particular hike is quite popular, so two parking lots are available at the beginning of the trail.

Wear Farm City Park in Pigeon Forge also provides a basketball court, a lighted football field, a multi-purpose field, two playgrounds and a 1.3 mile long walking trail. The walking trail begins at Pavilion Two, and runs around the football field and baseball complex before circling back to the pavilion.

You’ll have a chance to experience the area up close and personally. Best of all, you are being given an opportunity to take part in an amazing adventure. And if this is a new adventure for you then horseback riding lessons will make sure that you are comfortable and know how to best enjoy the experience safely.

Horseback riding Lessons

There are four stables within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park that provide guided rides for both beginners and experts. These include Smoky Mountains and Sugarlands in the Gatlinburg area, Smokemont Riding Stables in Cherokee North Carolina, and Cades Cove Riding Stable in Townsend Tennessee. Several other private stables are scattered about the surrounding towns of Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Sevierville.

All of these stables offer guided rides in the Smoky Mountains from March to November. Some may have age and weight limits. Horses go at a walking pace, perfect for those just learning. One can choose from rides that last from 45 minutes to several hours. Little ones, elderly, or those who are not sure about actual horseback lessons can pick from pony rides, hayrides, and carriage tours.

What to Expect

Horseback riding lessons will open up a whole new world to Smoky Mountain visitors. It is an excellent way to explore the area. Wildlife such as turkey, white tail deer, and black bears are commonly spotted. In addition, riders will enjoy amazing views of the mountains and beautiful scenery.

One hour rides on average range from $20 to $25. There are 550 miles of trails to use, some with campsites. Expect trail conditions to possibly be rugged. They can narrow or become steep, but guided tours for novice riders will avoid these areas.

Tips for First Time Riders

The biggest tip is to dress correctly. Riding boots or sturdy shoes are a must. A slight heel is recommended, such as you would find on cowboy boots. All shoes must be closed toed for protection. Sandals and sneakers are not a good option for horseback riding. Wear looser long pants or jeans. Most stables will provide all other necessary equipment, including helmets. Many require children to wear a helmet, but it is a good idea for all beginners of any age.

Don’t be scared or nervous. The horses can pick up on your feelings and react accordingly. Relax and have fun. The experienced guides are there to help you and make sure your ride is an enjoyable and safe one.

The park is constantly adding something new to keep guests coming back each year. In 2012, Dollywood added a huge new $20 million steel roller coaster called Wild Eagle. The ride joins Dollywood’s excellent lineup of coasters including Mystery Mine, Tennessee Tornado and Thunderhead. This new style of roller coaster, termed a ‘Wing Coaster’, features two seats that extend beyond the track on both the left and right side of the coaster train. Therefore, while riding Wild Eagle, guests have nothing but air under their feet so that they experience a flying sensation. Wild Eagle’s first drop rises to 135 feet, and the coaster reaches 61 miles per hour as it travels through four inversions including a 110 foot tall loop! The ride won Amusement Today magazine’s prestigious Golden Ticket Award for the best new ride of 2012. Wild Eagle has already delighted thousands of guests, so thrill seekers should spring into Dollywood in 2013 to see what everyone is talking about!

In 2013, Dollywood’s Splash Country will debut RiverRush, Tennessee’s first water coaster. On this new generation of water ride, guests will begin their experience with a 25 foot first drop at a 45 degree angle! Guests will continue their ride with three more exciting drops, wild hairpin turns and dark tunnels, all while riding in a four passenger toboggan raft! RiverRush is scheduled to debut in May of 2013. To enjoy Wild Eagle and RiverRush, guests should arrive at park opening and enjoy them first thing in the morning when lines are short.
